The men’s 1’s were away on Wednesday night at Wigan. Always a feisty affair, this one was no different. Bolton started the better team, early chances went to the away side, nothing clear cut but half chances. Enough to wake the home side up who came back into the game mid-way through the first half.
Wigan earned a penalty corner with 22 minutes gone, a mishit shot wrong footed everyone and went in, sloppy from Bolton and they paid the price. They upped their game, important to get back into the game before half time. Coach Deano has challenged the team to earn 10 penalty corners a game, with their 3rd corner they equalised. They worked a training ground routine as George Brennan tap home after good work from Sam Robinson. Half time saw the teams level.
Bolton started the second half fast, another penalty corner, are you counting Deano, and Scott Mather found Sam Robertson who had a space the size of the DW stadium to score at the near post.
It really should have been 3-1, but Bolton were wasteful, and wastefulness is punished. More so when your central defender turns into Bambi on ice. Joel Reiss is under no danger, waits for an ice age to pass, before readjusting and slipping on dry land. The Wigan striker takes the ball and slots home with the 1 on 1.
From bad to worse as Wigan took the lead a few moments later, a slick move was punished by a strong finish in the D. The conditions worsened, the wind made it difficult for both teams, Bolton chased the game, and left gaps and were grateful to Keeper Amu who kept them in it with some fantastic saves. Bolton did get an equaliser, a good pass from Captain Mather for Lee Rammage to roll the defender and power through the keepers’ legs.
